The luxury of the showpiece bedroom, with its bed measuring 3 by 2.60 meters – over 30 women are said to have worked on the bedspread for seven years – exceeds that of its French exemplar. In the Hall of Mirrors, almost 100 meters long, over 1,800 candles could be lit on 44 standing candlesticks and 33 glass chandeliers, and their glow was magically reflected many times over in the mirrors.
Compared with these two state rooms the royal apartments turned out to be more intimate. The King Ludwig II Museum, with its modern design, displaying precious exhibits, is devoted to the life and work of the monarch. This palace, whose French gardens, laid out in an austerely geometrical design with its fountains restored, make up only part of the entire complex that was never completed, is surrounded by an extensive park with magnificent old trees.
