The natural landscape at the foot of the world-famous Neuschwanstein Castle is uniquely diverse: gentle Allgäu hills, the wild world of the mountains of the Ammergau, Lech Valley and Tannheim Alps and the idyllic lake landscape right on the edge of the Alpine range offer almost unlimited opportunities for an unforgettable and active holiday. Two hundred kilometres of hiking paths in the locality of Füssen alone, an extensive network of cycle tracks, Inline-Skating, kite flying, paragliding, ballooning, tennis, riding, golf, sailing, gliding, wind surfing, angling, boat trips on the Forggensee lake and, of course, bathing in one of the finest natural outdoor baths by the lakes or in the indoor swimming pool in Füssen – the variety of leisure activities means there is something for everyone. In winter the King’s Nook is a great attraction not only as a top region for cross-country skiers, but also on account of the programmes of Füssen’s National ice-hockey’s training centre and the charming slopes for alpine skiing on the mountains of Tegelberg and Breitenberg, which are members of the Allgäu-Tyrol Ski-Lift Association “Vitales Land”.
That the region, however, is also a man-made landscape formed over centuries is not something that only becomes clear during the first visit to the royal castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, which attract visitors from all over the world to one of the most beautiful holiday regions in the entire Alps. In the heart of the King’s Nook lies the over 700-year-old mountain town of Füssen, at the southern end of the famous Romantic Road. The unique ambience of the Old Town, in which different historical epochs meet in a harmonious ensemble, invites you to go on journeys of discovery into the past but also to take a leisurely stroll through the shops. The outlying rural districts are situated around the core town of Füssen: Bad Faulenbach in the car-free Faulenbach Valley Nature Park; Hopfen am See, praised as the “Allgäu Riviera” for the southern elegance of its townscape and the fantastic panorama view of the Alpine peaks; Weissensee, recommended as a family holiday resort by the German automobile club ADAC, and with many opportunities for holidays on the farm. Anyone wanting to do something for their health and their own well-being can choose between a huge number of attractive health, fitness and wellness programmes in the spa hotels and sanatoriums. A new cultural highlight has been added to the town’s high-calibre programme of events some years ago: the “Kaiserfest”, a big medieval open-air festival in the mid of july every two years, carries the audiences away into the golden era of Füssen’s history.
