Füssen: Jewel in a Majestic Alpine Setting

Füssen greets approaching travellers from afar – this beautiful country town presents a truly idyllic vista, doing justice to the Romantic Road on which it lies. The High Castle, the Baroque abbey of St. Mang and the mosaic of rooftops are set picturesquely in the lush green countryside.

The town’s 700 years of history have left behind plenty of monuments and relics. In the winding streets and alleyways of the medieval Old Town the Gothic gabled roofs of the tall patrician houses rub shoulders with the remains of the old city walls and Baroque and Rococo churches, creating a contrasting but pleasantly harmonious ensemble. The High Castle overlooking the town was once the summer residence of the prince bishops of Augsburg; their former residential chambers now house an excellent art gallery, a branch of the great Bavarian State Painting Collections. Directly beneath the castle stand the magnificent Baroque buildings of the former Benedictine abbey of St. Mang. Inside travellers will find the town’s museum with a great collection of historic lutes and violins, splendid Baroque halls and the famous „Dance of the death“ of Füssen.

Füssen has more to offer than cultural attractions, however. The beautiful surrounding countryside is a paradise for walkers and hikers, and also offers opportunities for sporting activities of all kinds, in winter especially for Alpine skiing, cross country skiing and ice-skating. You can choose between the gentle rolling hills of the Allgäu, the wild mountain scenery of the Ammergau, Lechtal and Tannheim Alps and the idyllic lake district in the Alpine foothills. Those interested in health holidays will find outstanding facilities at the health resort hotels and sanatoriums in Füssen and its environs, with a rich selection of health, fitness and wellness programmes.

Special topics in the Füssen region in 2011:

One of the cultural musts is the string instrumental festival “vielsaitig” (multistring, versatile) from 24.08. to 03.09.2011. With reference to the 125th anniversary of the death of the Bavarian fairy-tale king Ludwig II. its motto is “Romanticism” and presents extraordinary concert experiences and musical events featuring international ensembles.

It the summer of 2011 the new Wittelsbach Museum at the foot of Neuschwanstein castle will be opened. In addition to visiting the King’s palaces of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau you can discover in detail the history of Ludwig II. and the Bavarian Royal Family and see many valuable exhibits, hitherto unshown in public.

For US guest touring Bavaria by car, Füssen is a good stop-over for a trip on the German Alpine Road. From Lindau to Berchtesgaden famous sights line this tourist route such as Neuschwanstein castle, the Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee palaces or the Wieskirche church (UNESCO World Heritage Site), historical towns such as Lindau, Füssen and Bad Reichenhall as well as typical Bavarian villages such as Oberammergau and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. And of course there is Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze (2,962 m) as well as the picture-perfect landscape of the alpine foothills and many idyllic lakes. The Bodensee-Königssee cycle route is also ideal for cycling along the Bavarian alpine chain.
